Torrance Man Arrested After Gunfire Outside White House Correspondents’ Dinner

April 25, 2026

TORRANCE, Calif. (BTVN)— A night meant to celebrate journalism and political tradition erupted into panic and gunfire Saturday when a Southern California man allegedly opened fire outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, sending hundreds of attendees diving for cover and prompting a swift evacuation of President Donald Trump.

Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Allen, a 31-year-old teacher from Torrance, California, who is now in federal custody as investigators race to determine what drove the attack at one of Washington’s most tightly secured events.

The gunfire sent hundreds of attendees scrambling for cover and prompted Secret Service agents to rush the president and other dignitaries to safety.

Officials said Allen was armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a handgun and knives, when he approached the magnetometer screening area outside the main ballroom.

At least one Secret Service agent was struck during the confrontation, but officials said the bullet was stopped by the agent’s protective vest and the injury was not life-threatening.

The shooting unfolded just outside the Washington Hilton, where the annual dinner was underway, drawing the nation’s top political leaders, journalists and public figures. According to officials, Allen approached a security screening area near the hotel’s main lobby before opening fire, triggering chaos just steps from the ballroom.

Witnesses described hearing a rapid series of gunshots — as many as eight — before Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers flooded the area with weapons drawn.

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, who was inside the dinner, described a chaotic scene as guests scrambled for safety. “I heard pop, pop, pop, and everyone just dropped,” Blitzer said. “People were screaming, trying to get out. It was pure chaos.”

Guests dropped to the ground or scrambled for exits as agents moved quickly to secure the scene. President Trump was rushed out by Secret Service, along with other senior officials, as authorities worked to contain the threat.

Law enforcement officials say Allen was apprehended within minutes. Investigators believe Allen acted alone, but say the case remains fluid as federal agencies, including the FBI, continue to piece together his movements and intent.

A SUSPECT FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Back in Torrance, a quiet residential neighborhood became the center of a major federal investigation as FBI agents swarmed a home believed to be connected to Allen.

Armored vehicles and agents in tactical gear surrounded the property on Gramercy Avenue, where neighbors watched as investigators entered the home just before midnight.

Neighbors described Allen as a relatively quiet presence in the community. One neighbor said he occasionally saw him riding a moped through the neighborhood.

“He kept to himself,” one neighbor said. “You just never expect something like this.”

Local officials emphasized that the suspect’s alleged actions do not reflect the broader community.

“The action of one person does not represent the entire city,” Torrance Mayor George Chen said.

According to publicly available records and professional profiles, Allen has a background in engineering and education. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering and later worked as a tutor for a private education company.

He had previously been recognized by his employer, including being named “Teacher of the Month,” according to a profile linked to him.

A HIGHLY SECURED EVENT SHAKEN

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is an annual Washington tradition dating back more than a century, typically attended by the president, senior government officials and members of the press.

Security at the event is usually extensive, particularly when the president is present. The Washington Hilton has long been considered a secure venue and is frequently used for high-level events.

Despite those measures, the shooting raised questions about how the suspect was able to get so close to a heavily protected gathering.

Officials defended the response, saying the multi-layered security system worked as intended by stopping the suspect before he could enter the main ballroom.

“The Secret Service and law enforcement acted quickly and decisively,” Trump said following the incident, praising agents for their response.

MOTIVE UNCLEAR AS INVESTIGATION DEEPENS

As of Sunday, Allen remained in custody and was expected to face multiple federal charges, including assault on a federal officer and using a firearm in a violent crime.

Investigators continue to piece together a timeline of events leading up to the shooting, including how the suspect obtained his weapons and whether he had any assistance.

They are also working to determine whether Allen had specific targets in mind or broader intentions.

Back in Torrance, residents expressed shock that a neighbor could be connected to such a high-profile act of violence.

“I got caught up in this circus of helicopters and media,” one nearby resident said, describing the sudden influx of law enforcement and reporters.

For now, authorities say the focus remains on understanding what led to the attack — and preventing future incidents at major public events.

The shooting comes amid broader concerns about political violence in the United States, with officials warning that tensions remain high.

No additional injuries were reported, and officials say the quick response by law enforcement likely prevented a more serious outcome.

The investigation remains active.
