Cellphone ban coming soon for many California school districts

LONG BEACH, Calif. — The Long Beach Unified School District is officially putting into effect its new cellphone ban policy. This comes after the state’s Phone-Free Schools Act which is set to launch in July 2026.

LBUSD claims that this regulation will restore classroom focus and support students’ mental health. All schools in the district are required to enforce this ban starting the second semester of the 2025-2026 school year.

Students across all campuses will be required to have their phones “off and away” during the school day, with the exception of high school students, who are allowed to use their devices during lunch. Electronics will not be permitted in restrooms, locker rooms and even field trips.

Long Beach will be one of the first large. districts in the state enacting the Phone-Free Schools Act, setting the example for smaller districts statewide.
