Who We Are
Beach TV News is CSULB’s newly rebranded and relaunched student produced newscast which prepares students for careers in television news. Each week, students are put through a rigorous MMJ (multimedia journalist) bootcamp where they learn to write, shoot, and edit packages for TV and the web, as well as produce and direct during a live broadcast. The goal is to give students the skillset that will make them competitive and employable in the current journalism job climate.

Getting Involved
There are many ways to get involved with BTVN. Several courses in the Department of Journalism & PR feed into BTVN productions:
- Jour 482 is our signature course. Students in this course are immersed in a real TV-newsroom experience and work under deadline pressure to produce a nightly newscast. (Prerequisite: JOUR 120 and JOUR 321 with a grade of “C” or better.) Students may repeat this course to a maximum of 6 units in different semesters.
- Jour 325 is our innovation course. Students learn how to engage younger audiences through the use of vertical video. (Prerequisite: JOUR 104 or JOUR 120.)
- Jour 321 is our introductory course. Students learn to shoot video with professional Sony cameras and learn to edit on Adobe Premiere Pro. (Prerequisite: JOUR 120 with a grade of “C” or better.)
Contributors
In Fall 2025 we launched our content creators program which allows contributors to publish their work across all our platforms including our nightly newscast, our IGTV and TikTok shows, our website, and/or our socials. The content creators program is ideal for students who are still working on prerequisites for the courses listed above but who are passionate about video and multimedia journalism and want to be involved with BTVN. If you are interested in becoming a contributor please email our Executive Producer of Multimedia, Skylar Stock <skylar.stock01@student.csulb.edu> or Professor Jesús Ayala <jesus.ayala@csulb.edu>.
