New sport challenges participants to play volleyball with no hands

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. — A new sport is drawing crowds on the sand as athletes gather along the shoreline to show off a fast-paced mix of skill and flair.

Footvolley, a blend of soccer technique and volleyball rules, is gaining momentum worldwide. Originating in Brazil, the sport has begun carving out a community on the Los Angeles beaches, attracting longtime soccer players, beach-goers and newcomers looking for a fresh challenge.

Julianne Braga, JB Footvolley Academy coach, and some participants shared their perspectives on the sport’s rapid growth, its appeal, and how it is shaping a new kind of beach culture.

More events, tournaments, and pickup matches are planned throughout the year in different beaches across the country as interest continues to rise along the coast
