Spider Pavilion provides arachnid “exposure therapy” through education

LOS ANGELES — Get to know arachnids up close in this spider-filled space.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles reopened up their annual Spider Pavilion on Sept. 14, hoping to replace fear with fascination.

The exhibit has been amplifying spiders with the open-air habitat for 20 years. When specialists observed the growth of spiders in the Butterfly Pavilion, they knew they had to showcase their process.

“It started as kind of a side story of the Butterfly Pavilion, and then became its entire own space,” Becca Parter, LANHM educator, said.

Now, there are over 300 spiders in the pavilion, housing multiple different species –from tarantulas to orb weavers.

The Spider Pavilion operates from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and will stay open for the season until November 30.

For those that want to get entangled in the wide world of webs, tickets that include admission to the LANHM cost $18 and can be purchased online.
