LONG BEACH, Calif. — Jewelbox Children’s Theater Company is a local non-profit organization that strives to bring equitable arts programs to the youth of Long Beach. Last spring, they partnered with the Long Beach Playhouse and put on a production of Hadestown Teen Edition.
Hadestown is a musical interpretation of the Greek mythological tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. The production ran from April 24 to May 25, consisting of weekend shows split between two casts, ranging from ages 13 to 19. A production like Hadestown requires emotional maturity, something which this show’s cast did not lack.
The entire production was free of cost for its participants, with Jewelbox providing costumes and props. Since 2016, the company has put on musicals, worked with elementary schools, and hosted events for children in the city. Offering classes like Costume Design and Theatrical Makeup, programs like this allow for the creativity of our youth to flow.
