LONG BEACH— Long Beach State’s men’s volleyball team opened its 2025 season with a commanding 3-0 victory over No. 3 UCLA on February 7 at the Walter Pyramid. The Beach dominated the match with set scores of 25-17, 25-23, and 25-21.
Freshman setter Simeon “Moni” Nikolov showcased his exceptional skills, contributing significantly to the team’s offensive flow. His precise sets and powerful serves were instrumental in securing the win. Senior outside hitter Skyler Varga delivered a standout performance, leading the team with 14 kills and maintaining a .500 hitting percentage.
Long Beach State’s defense was equally impressive, with libero Ilay Haver recording 10 digs, ensuring the Bruins’ attacks were consistently thwarted. The team’s cohesive play and strategic execution underscored their readiness for the challenges ahead.
The victory over UCLA not only marked a strong start to the season but also set a high standard for the Beach, signaling their intent to contend for the national title. With a blend of seasoned leadership and emerging talent, Long Beach State is poised for a successful campaign in the competitive landscape of collegiate men’s volleyball.
