Loggerhead Turtle Released into Wild After Rehabilitation at Long Beach Aquarium

By Linsey Towles

LONG BEACH— A loggerhead sea turtle, known as Lucy, was successfully released into the Pacific Ocean on October 16, 2024, after undergoing three months of rehabilitation at the Aquarium of the Pacific. The turtle was found near Avila Beach on June 17, 2024, in a debilitated state, exhibiting symptoms of hypothermia, dehydration, eye ulcers, and flipper wounds. She was transferred to the aquarium for treatment under authorization from NOAA Fisheries.

Veterinary staff administered fluids, antibiotics, and eye ointment, while providing a diet of high-quality seafood to aid in her recovery. Over the course of her rehabilitation, Lucy gained approximately 10 pounds, about 20% of her body weight, and regained strength, allowing for her release.

The release event was attended by aquarium staff, volunteers, and supporters, who witnessed Lucy’s return to the ocean aboard a Harbor Breeze Cruises boat. Following the release, aquarium officials announced plans to construct a 4,000-gallon sea turtle rehabilitation enclosure to enhance their capacity for future rescues and rehabilitations. The project is supported by a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, NOAA Fisheries, and the KM Shimano Family Foundation, with additional fundraising efforts underway to secure necessary equipment and medical supplies.
